Carlsbad Dogs Get a New Park

By Daniel Ventura
Continuing to improve Poinsettia Park, the newly implemented dog park has opened its door to its four-legged visitors due to the vast amounts of requests from the community; therefore, the city council made it a goal to complete this project.

The dog park is within Poinsettia Community Park, 6600 Hidden Valley Rd., Carlsbad, CA 92011. The park hours are from 8 a.m. until 10 p.m., which allows your dog to enjoy the outside without a leash.

The park contains more than 25,000 square feet and many amenities such as agility equipment, water fountains, separate sections for large and small dogs, and a large grass field. With thoughtful planning, the Carlsbad City Council installed comfortable seating areas for the owners, making it suitable to take care of their dogs. The separate sections allow the owners to feel comfortable letting their dogs run loose around the open area. Additionally, providing drinking fountains for the various sized dogs, holistically providing a positive experience for the dogs and owners.

One of the greatest highlights that the Carlsbad City Council is most proud of is its ability to listen to the people. Receiving over 200 emails from the community to implement a grass field, the council heard and brought an open grass field for the dogs. Also, before the dog park’s current location, the plans were to build it at the grass bowl, which is an area where many children grew up playing around, yet with the feedback of the children and residents, they decided to find a new site, which now lies at the front of the park.

The park opened on Wednesday August 27th at 2:30, welcoming Carlsbad Mayor Matt Hall, Carlsbad City Council, and Parks & Recreation staff at the ribbon-cutting ceremony. After the event, the dogs were allowed to roam around throughout the park and try out the new equipment. Sparky, the fire dog mascot, went around taking pictures with the new guests, continuing to celebrate the grand opening of the dog park.

As one of the most valued projects for the community, the dog park is considerate to all its guests, even humans, and it is where many generations of dog owners will continue to bring their dogs. The city of Carlsbad is proud to present this project and cannot wait to see the many guests that these new amenities will bring for the years to come.
