If you see a black-and-white pulled up at your school this week, don’t worry. Just welcome your Carlsbad Police Department Patrol Officers! The week of September 30 to October 4 has been designated Carlsbad Police Department Welcome Week. Carlsbad Unified values its strong partnership with the Carlsbad Police Department (CPD). So, in coordination with our Safety Coordinator Malcolm Warfield, CPD Patrol Officers have been invited to visit CUSD schools.
Carlsbad’s Patrol Officers are assigned to beats throughout the city for a period of six months, and then every September and March they rotate to a new beat or shift. CPD Welcome Week is an opportunity for Patrol Officers to visit the schools within their newly assigned beats, meet the front office staff, administrators, and School Resource Officers (SRO’s), and orient themselves to our campuses. The officers will take note of any new construction or physical changes on campus, school drop-off and pick-up patterns, and the routes of children walking to school.
“Our schools are sacred places,” said Warfield. “Our hope is that our officers won’t have to respond to incidents at our schools, but that, if becomes necessary, they will now be more familiar with the campuses and the staff.”
Officers are invited to visit CUSD campuses on Tuesday, October 1, and Thursday, October 3, between 9am and 11am, but may arrive at different times as their schedules permit.
