Preservation of open space, managing growth and supporting small businesses were among the most important issues to Carlsbad residents according to a new survey presented to the Carlsbad City Council Jan. 14.
Last year, the City Council identified some of the concerns frequently brought up by constituents and asked staff to use a survey to find out which ones were most important to residents citywide. The City of Carlsbad has conducted resident surveys since 2002 to measure satisfaction with services and opinions about city issues. The survey included responses from 1,000 residents chosen at random. The results can be generalized to the entire adult population of Carlsbad within plus or minus 3% margin of error.
The following issues were considered highly important by at least three-quarters of residents:
Preserving open space
Maintaining the city’s character overall and in the Village
Managing growth
Supporting small businesses and a healthy business climate
However, nearly all the issues presented were very important to at least half of all residents. In addition to the survey, the project included in-person interviews with 155 residents and small group discussions with teens and Spanish speaking residents. The research report is available on the city’s website. The research findings are used along with public input gathered throughout the year to help inform City Council goals and resource priorities. The City Council will discuss priorities for the fiscal year 2021 city budget at its workshop Tuesday, Jan. 21, 5:00 p.m., at the Faraday Administration Center, 1635 Faraday Ave.
