Carlsbad School Board Approves Resolution to Place Facilities Bond on the November Ballot

The Carlsbad Unified School District (CUSD) Board of Trustees unanimously approved a resolution to place a facilities bond measure on the ballot in the November 2018 election. In order to maintain high-quality education in local schools, the facilities bond measure would generate up to $265 million for facility repairs, improvements and updates.

In January 2018, the CUSD Board approved a Long Range Facilities Master Plan (LRFMP), describing the facilities needs in Carlsbad schools over the next 15 to 20 years. Projects funded by the upcoming facilities bond measure are driven by the LRFMP and would focus on:

•Repairs: Repair or replace deteriorating roofs, plumbing and electrical systems where needed

•In-Demand Careers: Upgrade science labs, engineering labs and career technical education facilities to prepare students for college and in-demand careers in fields like healthcare, biomedical science, computer science, robotics and skilled trades

•Science, Math and the Arts: Update classrooms, science labs and instructional technology to support high-quality instruction in science, technology, engineering, the arts and math (STEAM)

•Safe, Modern Classrooms: Update older schools to meet the same standards as newer schools

•Energy Efficiency and Sustainability: Replace inefficient heating, cooling, lighting and water systems where needed to conserve resources and save money on utility bills

•Technology: Keep computer systems and instructional technology up-to-date

•Safety: Ensure the safety and security of all students and staff

According to CUSD Board President Ray Pearson, “This is the beginning of an exciting new chapter for Carlsbad schools as we prepare all students for success, by continuing to provide an extraordinary education in an inspiring environment. Our award-winning elementary, middle and high schools improve our quality of life and protect the value of our homes, and make Carlsbad a desirable place to live and work.”
