CARLSBAD — A hotel for housing.

The concept is gaining popularity, while the Carlsbad City Council unanimously approved the application to convert the Studio 6 Extended Stay hotel on the corner of Avenida Encinas and Cannon Road, one block west of Interstate 5, into 98 apartments during their meeting on Tuesday.

The property will keep its pool, spa, and 123 parking spaces, while adding a dog run, several pickleball courts and rebranding as The Flats at Terramar. The 98-room hotel, formerly known as the Inns of America, will transfer ownership to Allied Development Services and includes 75 studio apartments and 23 one-bedroom units, with 15 of those as deed-restricted affordable residences, according to Lauren Yzaguirre, the city’s senior planner.

The development will not increase the building’s square footage and will retain the current footprint of 65,763 square feet on a 3.12-acre parcel. The project is exempt from the California Environmental Quality Act as it’s considered infill development, Yzaguirre said.

“This project is a great idea,” Mayor Keith Blackburn said. “Residents complain about building another project (and adding more impacts). These residents are going to be much better neighbors.”
