The City of Carlsbad will hold a special election March 3, 2020, to fill the District 1 City Council vacancy created by the resignation of Council Member Barbara Hamilton, whose term expires in November 2022.

District 1 residents interested in running for City Council are encouraged to set up an appointment with the Office of the City Clerk at 760-434-2808 to get the needed forms and other helpful information.

Nomination period begins
Nomination papers may be requested through the Office of the City Clerk, 760-434-2808.

December 6
Nomination period ends
All candidates must file nomination papers and candidates’ statements of qualifications with the Office of the City Clerk no later than 5 p.m.

Random alphabet drawing
The California Secretary of State will hold a random alphabet drawing, which the City Clerk will use to determine the order of the candidates’ names on the ballot

Background on the vacancy

The City Council District 1 seat is currently vacant and will be filled during the March 3, 2020, election.

Under Carlsbad’s Municipal Code, a vacancy can be filled three ways: The City Council may appoint someone or call a special election. If the City Council votes to appoint, voters may force a special election by petition
