VISTA, CA (MAY 7, 2024) — Alta Vista Botanical Gardens (AVBG) proudly announces its 25th Anniversary, a milestone marking a quarter century of community engagement, environmental conservation, and cultural enrichment. To commemorate this landmark occasion, AVBG is hosting an evening Gala on Saturday, September 7, 2024, set against the enchanting backdrop of the garden’s lush landscapes.
Since its inception, AVBG has provided North San Diego County with a sanctuary where nature and culture harmoniously blend. This Gala event celebrates the garden’s past achievements and aims to gather support for its future initiatives, ensuring it remains a vital part of the Vista community.
Alta Vista Botanical Gardens History
Alta Vista Botanical Gardens has a rich history dating back to its inception in 1999 when the Vista Botanical Garden Foundation was established. The roots of this botanical haven trace back to the old Smitgen property, a sprawling 14-acre site that was acquired by the City of Vista in 1990. This lush expanse was an integral part of the master plan crafted in 1970, envisioning a space where nature’s beauty could flourish.
In May of 1999, a group of dedicated individuals, including Founders Dr. M.E. Darian, Rocco Valluzzi, Larry Hoekstra, JoAnn Hoekstra, and Joe Lentz, joined hands to bring the vision to life. Their commitment and passion culminated in the creation of the Vista Botanical Garden Foundation, marking the beginning of a journey that has since blossomed into an integral part of the community.
Over the past two decades, AVBG has evolved into a sanctuary of tranquility and natural splendor. Visitors are greeted by a harmonious blend of flora, each corner thoughtfully designed to showcase the diversity of plant life. The gardens stand as a testament to the meticulous planning and unwavering dedication of those who envisioned and nurtured this botanical haven.
This year, AVBG has been nominated as a finalist for non-profit of the year by Vista Chamber Heroes of Vista. This esteemed recognition is a testament to the positive impact AVBG has had on the community and its unwavering commitment to fostering a love for nature and environmental stewardship.
