The City of Carlsbad will add 20 new electric vehicle charging stations at its facilities as part of a long-term strategy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions citywide. Eighty percent of the cost of the new stations, which will be used for city fleet vehicles and city employees’ vehicles, will be covered by Electrify America through a partnership with the city.

Electrify America is a subsidiary created by Volkswagen to coordinate the implementation of a $2 billion settlement with the state and federal governments after the company admitted installing software in diesel-powered vehicles to cheat on emissions tests. Volkswagen is investing $800 million of the settlement money in California over a 10-year period on zero-emission-vehicle infrastructure, education and access.
One of the areas of investment is installing EV charging stations at multi-family housing developments and workplaces at a reduced cost to the site host.
The city will get 10 new EV charging stations at its Faraday Administration Center and 10 at the Carlsbad City Library on Dove Lane.
The total cost is about $100,000, of which the city will pay about $20,000. A company called Greenlots will maintain the stations for eight years. After 10 years, the city can continue to use the stations through a paid contract with Greenlots, find another provider or stop using the stations.
The new stations support the city’s goal of increasing the number of zero-emissions vehicle miles traveled in Carlsbad from a 15 percent to 25 percent by 2035. This is one of many strategies for reducing greenhouse gas emissions outlined in the city’s Climate Action Plan, which was approved by the City Council in 2015. The city also recently installed 14 new public charging stations, 10 at Stagecoach Community park and four in the Village area. Including the city’s two original stations at Alga Norte Community Park, the city now has 16 EV charging stations for the public to use.
