This is the proclamation read by Vista Mayor John Franklin at Tuesdays City Council Meeting
WHEREAS, it is with great admiration appreciation that we recognize the extraordinary efforts and quick thinking displayed by a few of our hometown heroes, Firefighter-Paramedics: Marouf Suleiman, Wesley Najarro and Jared Derieux, Engineer Joshua Spann and Captain Justin Golden in a life-saving incident on April 8, 2023. The application of Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) during a critical moment, not only demonstrated exceptional skill but also showcased the value of preparedness and courage under pressure.
In the face of an emergency, the crew of RA 121 took immediate and decisive action, recognizing the gravity of the circumstances and the urgent need for intervention. With unwavering determination, they performed CPR with precision and dedication, delivering chest compressions and rescue breaths effectively and in accordance with established protocols. They never wavered from their work and still managed to reassure the family who were vital in the chain of survival. The coordination aided the doctors, nurses and hospital staff who continued for 70 minutes of CPR for one of our citizens.
It is worth acknowledging that the application of CPR is not solely a mechanical process; it requires a combination of technical proficiency and emotional strength, composure and focus throughout the ordeal, a testament to their remarkable character and commitment to saving lives no matter the time of day or night. Their actions breathed hope into a dire situation and served as a beacon of reassurance for all those present.
The result of teamwork, their efforts were nothing short of miraculous. Their timely and proficient administration of CPR played an instrumental role in restoring vital circulation and preserving the precious gift of life. The positive outcome underscores the importance of bystander CPR and its potential to be the difference between life and death and, in this case, neurovascular intact. This patient was able to come to the station to express his and his family’s gratitude to his heroes for their efforts, proficiency and professionalism, and for never giving up.
This story is not an anomaly for the Vista Fire Department Paramedics; on July 21, 2023, our rescuers were at it again. This time, vital in saving the life of a young lady, who if not for their efforts and the assistance and willingness of bystanders to do Hands Only CPR, this young lady would not be able to tell her story today.
The bar was set for rapid response times which were met by their arrival to the scene within 3 minutes of the call being dispatched, rapid assessment, intervention, and transport. The crew members of RA121 and E121, Firefighter0Paramedics; Fritz Eibel and Adrian Valdez, Marouf Suleiman and Engineer Matthew Eyerman, and Captain Chris Jones were sent into action.
Our Vista Firefighters answer many calls, from childbirth to resuscitations, where others run, these women and men run toward the adversity or challenge, whether it’s a fire, rescue, medical, or mental emergency, you can count on the Vista Fire Department.
NOW,THEREFORE, the Mayor and members of the Vista City Council extend their heartfelt gratitude and extend this commendation to our Vista Firefighters and invite all to honor their heroism. Their courage, proficiency, and humanity in performing life-saving CPR stand as a shining example, reminding us that preparedness, compassion, and action are essential elements in making the world a safer and better place for everyone.
