Coastal Academy sophomore, Tanner Rico, received the Council for Exceptional Children (CEC) Yes, I Can Award. Presented each year at the CEC Convention & Expo, the Yes, I Can Awards recognize 12 outstanding students with exceptionalities in six categories: Academics, Arts, School & Community Activities, Self-Advocacy, Technology, and Transition. Tanner received recognition in the Community Activity category. Tanner has Duchenne’s Muscular Disease (DMD) and speaks at community events to inform and educate others about his disease. He shares a message of hope and the importance of not letting DMD define or limit his dreams or ambitions. For nearly 40 years, the council has recognized children and youth with exceptionalities who have demonstrated their determination and achievements in multiple ways. More than 40,000 children and young adults recognized at the national, state, and/or provincial level since 1982. For more information about the CEC, visit here.
