A new off-leash dog park that’s being built at Poinsettia Community Park is starting to take shape, with some key milestones already in progress.
Rough grading is wrapping up this week
Construction of a new restroom building is under way
Underground electrical is being installed
Excavation has started on “bioswales,” which are natural-looking channels that collect stormwater runoff
The dog park, located near the park’s entrance, will include a shade structure and separate enclosures for large and small dogs. The new restroom and a new parking lot with 37 spaces, including four EV charging stations, will be created just south of the pickleball courts.
Construction is expected to wrap up in summer 2022. In the meantime:
Work is taking place Monday through Friday, from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Residents are still able to use the rest of the park. The only minor impacts will be to sidewalks between the pickleball courts and the basketball courts.
No restrictions are expected for the use of other park amenities.
All parking lots remain open.
When complete, the dog park will include:
An entry plaza with shade structures
Separate areas for large and small dogs
Dog agility equipment
Natural grass surface
Benches and picnic tables

In July, the Carlsbad City Council approved construction contracts for the new dog park to be built on the east side of Poinsettia Community Park.
Residents had requested the dog park for years and it was included in the Poinsettia Community Park Master Plan, but staff originally had planned for it to go in the western portion of the park. When the community expressed concern with that proposed location, city staff gathered input on another possible location at the park. The community overwhelmingly supported putting the dog park just south of the park’s main entrance on Hidden Valley Road, where a multigenerational community center was previously proposed.
In February 2018, the City Council approved staff’s recommendation to pursue plans to place the dog park at the alternate location.
