Cougars Erase Deficit to Defeat Gators, 71-67

SAN FRANCISCO – The Cal State San Marcos men’s basketball team erased an early 14-point deficit to defeat San Francisco State in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play on the road Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED •SF State took a 14-7 lead in the first four minutes of the game, but CSUSM brought the deficit down to 14-11 with a McCain jumper and a Gil-Fernandez layup.
•The Gators took a 14-point lead at 34-20 on a 3-pointer by Zane Paddon with 7:06 remaining in the half.
•A 7-0 run by CSUSM closed the gap to 38-31 with two minutes to go in the half.
•The Cougars ended the half trailing 40-33 to the Gators as Marcus Brown led the period with 11 points.
•CSUSM shot 46.7% (14-of-30) from the field for the half while SF State came in at 41.2% (14-of-34).
•The Gators had a 25-11 advantage on the boards in the first 20 minutes with 13 of its 25 coming on offensive rebounds.
•CSUSM tied the game at 47-all with a Darius Goudeau free throw at the 14:05 mark in the second half.
•The Cougars took their first lead of the game at 49-47 on jumper in the paint by McCain with 13:21 to go.
•CSUSM capped a 10-run with fast break layup by Brown at the 12:05 mark to put the Cougars up 53-47.
•A 13-2 run by SF State put the Gators back on top at 60-55 with 8:56 remaining.
•Tied at 64-all, Fuller made a bucket in the paint to put the Cougars ahead once again at 66-64, but a three by the Gators’ Linton Acliese gave SF State a 67-66 lead with 3:35 to play.
•A three by Blake Seits gave the Cougars a 69-67 lead with 2:37 to go.
•CSUSM held the SF State scoreless for the final two and half minutes.
•The Cougars ended the game shooting 46.6% (27-of-58) from the field while the Gators shot 40.3% (25-of-62).

FAST BREAKS •CSUSM improves to 10-10 (6-8 CCAA) while SF State drops to 8-12 (5-9 CCAA).
•The Cougars held the lead for just 6:15 while the Gators were ahead for 30:48.
•CSUSM held a 15-5 advantage for points off turnovers.
•The Gators committed 15 turnovers for the game compared to the Cougars’ season low of six.
•Fuller notched his eighth double-double of the season with 13 points and a season-high 15 rebounds.
•CSUSM was outrebounded by a 40-30 margin.
•The Cougars’ win snaps a four-game winning streak in the series by the Gators.
•Prior to today, CSUSM’s lone win in San Francisco occurred on Feb. 2, 2018.
•With their 10th win of the season, the Cougars surpassed their 2018-19 overall win total of nine.
