Cougars Fall 1-0 to Biola in 2021 Season Opener

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – An early second-half goal was the difference in the season opener for the Cal State San Marcos men’s soccer team as it fell 1-0 to Biola on Thursday afternoon at The Cage.

HOW IT HAPPENED
A would-be goal for Biola was waved off in the 27th minute after it was determined the Eagles were offside.
CSUSM had a chance in the 33rd minute as Alex Jung sent a ball into the box from the right side that was headed wide right of the goal by Aaron Alvarez.
After a Biola throw-in in the 48th minute, the Eagles’ Pontus Gitselov had a shot off the crossbar. On the rebound, Simonis proceeded to put the ball into the bottom right corner of the net for Biola’s lone goal of the game.
On a CSUSM free kick from the right side in the 87th minute, Juan Camilo Salazar’s shot to the high center portion of the goal was saved by Biola’s Luis Rodriguez and was deflected out of bounds.

QUICK KICKS
CSUSM moves to 0-1-0 on the year while Biola goes to 1-0-0.
The all-time series between the Cougars and Eagles is now knotted up at 5-5-3.
Biola now has a two-game winning streak against CSUSM.
CSUSM led the shot battle 6-4 with two shots on goal.
The Cougars had six corner kicks for the game while the Eagles had two.
The game was a feisty one as both sides tallied 20 fouls each. CSUSM was allocated four yellow cards compared to Biola’s two.
