Cougars Open Series with 16-5 Victory at Chico State

CHICO, Calif. – A barrage of hits and runs gave the Cal State San Marcos baseball team a series-opening 16-5 victory against Chico State in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play on Friday night at Nettleton Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED •CSUSM got on the board in the top of the first inning thanks to a sacrifice fly to center by Ott that scored Diggs. Diggs got the inning started with a single and a stolen base.
•Chico went up 2-1 in the bottom of the first on a two-run triple by Turner Olson.
•The Wildcats made it a 4-1 game in the bottom of the third with an RBI single by Olson through the left side and a CSUSM fielding error.
•The Cougars started clawing their way back beginning in the top of the fifth inning as a Rodriguez RBI single plated Teisher to make it 4-2.
•CSUSM made it 4-3 in the top of the sixth as Garcia hit an RBI single to score Van Til with one out.
•The Cougars posted a five-run inning in the top of the seventh on a two-run single by Diggs, a base-loaded hit-by-pitch by Buck, an RBI groundout by Garcia and a wild pitch that scored Ott to go up 8-4.
•The Wildcats gained a run back in the bottom of the seventh as Olson scored on an RBI groundout by Jorge Perez.
•CSUSM’s biggest inning of the night occurred in the top of the ninth as it scored eight runs with a two-run homer by Buck, an RBI single by Rico, an RBI double by Rodriguez, a two-run single by Diggs and a two-run single by Garcia.

QUICK HITS •CSUSM improved to 15-20 (11-18 CCAA) while Chico dropped to 15-12 (11-11 CCAA).
•Cougar starter Dylan Wannamaker (2-1) picked up the victory as he struck out three while allowing four runs (none earned) on seven hits in six innings of work.
•Chico starter Grant Larson (4-2) took the loss for the Wildcats as he allowed seven runs on 10 hits in six innings of action.
•Of CSUSM’s 20 hits, only two went for extra bases.
•The Cougars’ 20 hits tied a season high as they posted the same total against Cal State East Bay on Feb. 16.

The Cougars will continue their four-game series at Chico State with a doubleheader set for noon on Saturday.
