CSU San Marcos Women’s Basketball Falls 53-49 to San Francisco State

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos women’s basketball team dropped a 53-49 decision to visiting California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) opponent San Francisco State on Saturday afternoon at The Sports Center.

TOP PERFORMERS
Jon’Nae Vermillion – 21 points | 6 rebounds | 9-of-13 free throws
Emma Forel – 8 points | 12 rebounds | 3 assists
Dynnah Buckner – 12 points | 7 rebounds

HOW IT HAPPENED •The Cougars trailed SF State 36-20 at the break after shooting only 27.3 percent from the field to the Gators’ 55.2 percent.
•A layup by Buckner broke a four-plus minute drought to cut SF State’s lead to 51-44 at the 3:04 mark.
•Buckner made CSUSM’s first 3-pointer of the game at 2:16, and Stephanie Custodio followed it with a jumper to make it a two-point ballgame (51-49) with 1:47 remaining.
•SF State answered with a layup by Toni Edwards to move it up to 53-49 at 1:15.

FAST BREAKS •The Cougars fall to 5-3 (2-2 CCAA) while the Gators move up to 3-7 (1-4).
•Vermillion tallied a season-best 21 points.
•The Cougars held the advantage in rebounds (43-30), offensive rebounds (20-7), assists (8-6) and blocked shots (3-2).
•For the game, CSUSM shot a season-low 32.2 percent from the field and only 5.9 percent (1-of-17) from the 3-point arc.
•The Gators went 23-of-50 (46.0 percent) from the field and only took five shots from the 3-point line while making two.

The Cougars take a break from games to take finals next week before hosting Cal Poly Pomona on Wednesday, Dec. 19 at 3 p.m.
