The Cal State San Marcos women’s golf team’s historic season came to an end with the school’s first NCAA Division II National Championship Runner-up trophy as the Cougars fell 4-1 to Florida Tech on Saturday morning in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida.
FIRST TEE •Freshman Breann Horn led by as many as six strokes before Florida Tech’s Lucy Eaton charged back to win the match by one stroke.
•Senior Bergen Benedict dropped her match to FL Tech’s Paola Ortiz by four strokes despite finishing her final collegiate round with seven pars on the back nine.
•Junior Savannah Magallon overcame a six-stroke deficit on the final four holes, eventually falling by only one stroke to FL Tech’s Megan Dennis.
•Junior Jaime Jacob broke a tie on the 13th hole to finish with a five-stroke lead to defeat Noelle Beijer.
•Sophomore Claire Hogle played a steady back nine but fell by three strokes to Lauren Watson.

INSIDE THE SCORECARD •This is CSUSM women’s golf’s debut in the NCAA National Championships.
•CSUSM defeated Dallas Baptist 3-2 in the quarterfinals before upsetting defending NCAA Division II National Championship University of Indianapolis 3-2 in the semifinals.
•This is the first time in NCAA Division II Women’s Golf Championship history that the team champion would be determined by medal match play. The previous champions were decided by four-rounds of stroke play.
•CSUSM collected seven team championships and six individual championships in 2018-19, both program records.
