On October 16, 2020, at about 9:30 a.m., deputies at the Vista Detention Facility responded to an inmate who was in medical distress. Deputies found the inmate, eighty-one-year-old Nathan Lee Brogan, unresponsive in the dayroom area of the housing module. Deputies and medical staff performed lifesaving measures until relieved by fire department personnel. Brogan was transported to a local area hospital by ambulance. Unfortunately, Brogan was pronounced deceased shortly after arrival.
Brogan was booked into custody into Sheriff’s custody on September 4, 2018, by the San Diego Police Department for:
664 – 187(a) PC – Attempted Murder
246 PC – Shooting at an Inhabited Dwelling
245(A)(2) PC – Assault with a Deadly Weapon / Firearm
246.3 PC – Illegal Discharge of a Firearm
12022.5(a) PC – Use of a Firearm in a Felony
Brogan was later transferred to Patton State Hospital. On September 17, 2020, Brogan was transferred back into Sheriff’s custody awaiting a court hearing scheduled in November 2020. The Sheriff’s Homicide Unit responded to investigate the death. No evidence of foul play was discovered.
The Medical Examiner conducted an autopsy and completed their reports. They determined the cause of death to be acute myocardial infarction and the manner of death to be natural.
