Deputy Involved Shooting – Update

The Medical Examiner’s Office conducted the autopsy today and has identified the male as forty-year-old Eric Scott Anderson. Anderson is a resident of the city of San Diego. Anderson’s family has been notified of his death. The preliminary cause of death is gunshot wound and the manner of death is homicide.

Information from prior release:

On June 18, 2021, just after 8:00 a.m., Sheriff’s deputies responded to the 1500 block of Eolus Avenue in the city of Encinitas for a suspicious person in a vacant lot. Two deputies contacted the man. During the contact, the man produced a handgun resulting in two deputies discharging their firearms striking the man.

The deputies immediately provided lifesaving efforts to the man until relieved by fire personnel. The man was transported by ambulance to a local area hospital for treatment. Unfortunately, the man was pronounced deceased shortly after arrival.

No deputies were injured.

The Sheriff’s Homicide Unit responded and has assumed responsibility of the investigation. The circumstances of the shooting are currently under investigation.

The Medical Examiner’s Office has scheduled the autopsy for June 19, 2021. The man will be positively identified at autopsy.

A handgun was located at the scene where the man was shot.
