Doggone Comment Sparks Political Barking in Vista

VISTA — A joke and light-hearted fun or political subterfuge?

It’s the question the City Council nearly addressed during Tuesday’s meeting stemming from a comment from a volunteer emcee during the 65th annual Christmas parade on Dec. 2.

The emcee, Howard Andersen, a local pastor, said to vote for Denisse Barragan in the District 3 race in the 2024 election because she brought her dog to ride in a car during the parade.

The incident took place about 26 minutes into the parade when the emcee walked over to Barragan’s car, handed her the microphone and asked her to introduce herself. She gave her name; said she’s running for District 3 and wished the crowd a Merry Christmas. In addition, she brought her dog, Jackson, to ride in the car.

“I think just because, certainly, Jackson came along for the ride you need to vote for Denisse,” Andersen said. “Good luck Denisse.”
