CARLSBAD, Calif – On Friday, September 17, from 6 p.m. until 2 a.m., the next morning, the City of Carlsbad Police Department will hold a DUI Checkpoint at Carlsbad Boulevard and Beech Avenue.
Checkpoint locations are chosen based on a history of DUI collisions and arrests. The primary purpose of a checkpoint is not to make an arrest, but to promote public safety by deterring drivers from driving impaired.
During the checkpoint, officers will look for signs that drivers are under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs.
“The safety of those that travel on Carlsbad’s roadways is a priority,” stated Traffic Lieutenant Steve Thomas. “Working together and planning ahead to designate a driver or use rideshare services helps everyone to arrive safely home.”
The Police Department reminds the public that impaired driving is not just from alcohol. Some prescription medications or over-the-counter drugs may interfere with driving. Also, driving under the influence of marijuana is illegal.
Drivers charged with DUI face an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, as well as a suspended license.
