Efforts to Overturn Prop. 47 Ramps Up

SAN MARCOS — A bipartisan coalition is growing from the Bay Area to San Diego to repeal part of the controversial Proposition 47.

San Diego County District Attorney Summer Stephan along with San Marcos Mayor Rebecca Jones, Councilman Ed Musgrove and Assembly District 76 candidate Kristi Bruce Lane held a rally in San Marcos on Monday to lobby residents to sign The Homelessness, Drug Addiction and Theft Reduction Act petition to get it onto the November ballot.

Prop. 47 was passed in 2014 as a way to reduce the prison population, but also reclassified many crimes as misdemeanors, Stephan said. However, the impact of those crime reductions has led to a massive spike in thefts, property theft and drug crimes as police, and some district attorney’s offices, have not been able to prosecute, or not willing, she said.
