FIRE DEPARTMENT UPDATES:
On September 28 the Fire Department responded to a private residence for a potential hazardous materials spill. Approximately one quart of Mercury had been spilled near an entry way and in a dumpster. The affected area was isolated to keep the residents from becoming contaminated. The San Diego HAZMAT team responded to the incident and safely removed the
Mercury with no injuries. This is a very unusual occurrence and is a good reminder that Mercury is highly toxic and resilient on stationary items such as furniture, flat surfaces, and clothing.
During any incident where hazardous materials are suspected, keep people away from the spill and immediately call 911.
On September 30, Firefighter Paramedic Camron Beauchamps returned from deployment as a Fire Line Paramedic on the Dixie Fire.
On October 2, the Fire and Police Departments responded to a small apartment fire at 928 S. Tulip St. The first units on scene were able to observe a small amount of smoke and flames coming from the back side of the building. The fire was extinguished by an Escondido Police Officer’s use of a fire extinguisher. The origin of the fire was found to be inside a small trash can
just inside the door of the laundry room. Escondido firefighters completed an inspection to insure no fire extended further into the structure. There were no injuries related to this incident and the cause is under investigation.
