Escondido, CA – The City of Escondido invites artists to submit their qualifications for an exciting public art opportunity at the Grand Avenue roundabout which is currently under construction. This project will bring a sculpture to a key downtown intersection, with the artist able to add optional companion pieces, enhancing the City’s commitment to public art and community engagement.
The City is conducting a Request for Qualifications (RFQ) to identify artists capable of creating an original and impactful sculpture with the theme “Uniquely Escondido”. The Public Art Commission will review the submissions inclusive of public input and select 35 artists to advance to the Request for Proposals (RFP) process. During this next phase, selected artists will develop detailed proposals, which will be made available for public review and feedback.
“We are excited to invite artists to be part of this transformative project,” said Mayor Dane White. “This sculpture will live in the heart of Escondido on Grand Avenue and reflect what makes Escondido unique. Public input will play an important role in making
the final selection, ensuring that the artwork reflects the spirit and character of our community.”
The Public Art Commission and the City Council will evaluate the feedback and select the final artist for the project. The entire process is expected to be completed by late fall with installation to begin in January 2026.
Artists interested in submitting their qualifications can find more details and application instructions at https://www.escondido.gov/1238/Grand-Avenue-Art-Project.
The deadline for RFQ submissions is February 28, p.m. at 5 p.m. For more information, please contact the Public Art Administrator at publicart@escondido.gov
