“Doctors told me my son wasn’t going to live. I would never want any other parent to have to go through what we went through.”
Ahead of the holiday school break, CHP Commissioner Ray, Assemblyman Fong, and Families Remind Public About Deadly Consequences of Street Racing and Sideshows
WHAT: Assemblyman Vince Fong, CHP Commissioner Amanda Ray, Street Racing Kills, Heather Dubinetskiy and families who’ve lost loved ones to street racing will hold a press conference ahead of Thanksgiving and Christmas breaks, when school is out, to remind drivers and spectators about illegal street racing dangers, as well as applaud a new law signed by Governor Newsom. Assembly Bill 3 will crack down on illegal street racing by allowing courts to issue a driver’s license suspension for up to six months for participating in dangerous sideshows.
CHP Commissioner Ray will also discuss a new grant to beef up enforcement and undercover operations.

WHY: Dangerous driving activities, including street racing, so-called “side shows,” and street takeovers, continue to cause injuries and fatalities. In 2020, the California Highway Patrol responded to more than 25,000 calls involving illegal street racing activity statewide, an alarming increase of more than 3,500 calls from the year before. The results can be deadly for participants, spectators, and all road users, including other drivers, passengers, bicyclists, and pedestrians. In fact, recent research by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety found that even modestly higher speeds at the time of a crash dramatically increase the chances of severe injury and death, as well as cancel out the benefits of vehicle safety features (like airbags).
