Fatal Crash on I-5 in Encinitas

ENCINITAS, Calif.- On Monday, July 22, 2024, at approximately 2:30 p.m. officers from the California Highway Patrol-Oceanside Area office responded to a vehicle versus pedestrian crash on southbound Interstate 5, north of Birmingham Drive.

A Tesla Model Y was traveling in the southbound High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lane of Interstate 5. For reasons still under investigation, an unknown male pedestrian was crossing the southbound lanes of Interstate 5, when he was struck by the front of the Tesla.

The California Highway Patrol, and Encinitas Fire/Paramedics responded to the scene. Unfortunately, the male pedestrian succumbed to his injuries while on scene. The driver of the Tesla reported no injuries.

The investigation is ongoing, and the CHP is asking anyone who has information or may have witnessed this incident to contact the Oceanside Area CHP office at (760) 643-3400.
