Fatal Crash on I-5 in the Camp Pendleton Area

CAMP PENDLETON, Calif.- On Thursday, April 25, 2024, at approximately 9:00 p.m. officers from the California Highway Patrol-Oceanside Area Office responded to reports of a two-vehicle collision on southbound Interstate 5, south of Cockleburr, in the unincorporated San Diego County.

A 19-year-old male from Florida was driving a silver Hyundai Genesis in the southbound lanes of Interstate 5. For reasons still under investigation, the Hyundai veered to the right and onto the shoulder where it collided into a parked Kenworth truck tractor.

The California Highway Patrol and Camp Pendleton fire/paramedics responded to the scene. Unfortunately, both the 19-year-old male driver and his 21-year-old male passenger (from Pacoima, California) succumbed to their injuries while at the scene.

It is not yet known if alcohol and/or drugs played a factor in this collision. The investigation is ongoing, and the CHP is asking anyone who has information or may have witnessed this incident to contact the Oceanside Area CHP office at (760) 643-3400. The identity of the deceased will be released through the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office.
