CARLSBAD, Calif.- Officers from the California Highway Patrol (CHP) responded to reports of a two vehicle crash on southbound Interstate 5, south of Cannon Road.
On Sunday, October 22, 2023, at approximately 9:55 p.m., a 44-year-old from Escondido was driving a Nissan Altima in the southbound lanes of Interstate 5, south of Cannon Road. Ahead of the Ford Raptor was a Nissan Altima, being driven by a 53-year-old from La Jolla.
For reasons still under investigation, the Ford Raptor rearended the back of the Nissan, causing the Ford to overturn.
The California Highway Patrol and Carlsbad fire/paramedics responded to the scene. Both the driver of the Nissan and a 31-year-old female passenger were transported to a local area hospital for major injuries. Unfortunately, despite lifesaving efforts by medical personnel, the driver of the Nissan succumbed to her injuries while at the hospital. The driver of the Ford was transported to a local area hospital for minor injuries. The identity of the female driver will be released through the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office.
The driver of the Ford, Andrew David Shaw, was subsequently arrested by officers from the California Highway Patrol Oceanside Area office and later booked into the Vista Detention Facility. He faces multiple charges related to this incident including felony driving under the influence (DUI) and homicide related charges.
