Fatal Traffic Collision on Interstate 5 in Carlsbad

CARLSBAD, Calif.- On Saturday, January 13, 2024, at approximately 3:49 a.m. officers from the California Highway Patrol-Oceanside Area office responded to a multi vehicle crash on southbound Interstate 5, north of Palomar Airport Road.

A 28-year-old female driver, from Corona, California was driving a grey Hyundai sedan in the southbound lanes of Interstate 5. For reasons still under investigation, the driver of the Hyundai crashed into a green Jeep Grand Cherokee, causing the Jeep to overturn in the left-hand lanes where a white Nissan Altima, traveling in the High Occupancy (HOV) lane, collided into the overturned Jeep.

The California Highway Patrol responded to the scene. Unfortunately, the female passenger from the Jeep, a Richmond, California resident, succumbed to her injuries while on scene. The male driver of the Jeep, also a Richmond, California resident, was transported to a local area hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries. The male driver of the Nissan was transported to a local area hospital for major non-life threating injuries. The driver of the Hyundai reported no injuries. The roadway was affected from the time of the collision until approximately 9:00 a.m., as the scene was investigated.

The 28-year-old female driver, Angela Hays, was placed under arrest for Driving Under the Influence (DUI) and booked into the Vista Detention Facility, where she faces multiple charges related to this incident including felony DUI-Alcohol and gross vehicular manslaughter.
