The Sheriff’s Bomb/Arson Unit is investigating a deadly fire in Del Mar.
It happened on Friday, August 12 just before 2:00 p.m. in the 1500 block of Luneta Drive.
A passerby called 9-1-1 after hearing a smoke detector going off and heavy smoke coming from a house. Deputies with the North Coastal Sheriff’s Station, as well as firefighters with the Del Mar and Solana Beach Fire Departments responded to the scene.
A deputy initially went through the back door to search the house for victims, but was pushed back by heavy smoke. Firefighters continued the search and found a man in a bedroom. He was rushed to a hospital, but he did not survive his burn injuries.
The fire was confined to the bedroom. The American Red Cross is providing assistance to a relative visiting from out of town. The family dog was not hurt and is with the relative.
The Medical Examiner’s Office will identify the body, as well as determine cause and manner of death once the family has been notified.
Sheriff’s Bomb/Arson Detectives responded to the scene to determine the origin and cause of the fire. The investigation is ongoing.
