Federal Acknowledgement and the San Luis Rey Band of Mission Indians
We invite you to an informative lecture by Dr. Olivia Chilcote who will talk about her newly released book, Unrecognized in California, which tells the story of the San Luis Rey Band’s efforts to gain recognition through the Federal Acknowledgment Process. In the context of the history and experience of her tribal community, Chilcote traces the tensions and contradictions-but also the limits and opportunities-surrounding federal recognition for California Indians. Afterwards, you will have a chance to meet the author at a book signing and reception.

Dr. Olivia Chilcote is an enrolled citizen of the San Luis Rey Band of Mission Indians and an Associate Professor of American Indian Studies at San Diego State University. She received her Ph.D. and M.A. in the Department of Ethnic Studies at UC Berkeley and her B.A. in the Department of Ethnic Studies at UC Berkeley and her B.A. in the Department of Ethnic & Women’s Studies at Cal Poly Pomona. Her research and teaching focus on the areas of American Indian Studies, California Indian Studies, federal Indian policy, American Indian Identity, and Indigenous feminisms. In addition to authoring Unrecognized in California, her writing has appeared in California History, The Smithsonian’s Handbook of the North American Indians, Boletin: Journal of the California Missions Studies Association, American Indian Culture and Research Journal, and News From Native California. Dr. Chilcote serves on multiple Native advisory councils and is a founding member of the California Indian Studies and Scholars Association. At SDSU, she has received Excellence in Service and Most Influential Faculty Mentor Awards.
