In the history of American conservation, artists have long supported the preservation of the environment. Perhaps, one of the most known for these efforts is photographer Ansel Adams. Prior to Adams, the Hudson River School of oil painters brought awareness of the beauty and value of the American environment to the public.
On Sunday, July 25, 2021 the Friends of Hellhole Canyon hosted a CONNECT North County event. The meeting was comprised of proactive environmental groups gathered to discuss how artists continue to support the preservation of North County’s open space, protection of sensitive habitat and wildlife corridors, and promotion of responsible land use.
Presenting at the event, Valley Center Art Gallery’s (VCAG) mixed-media artist, Barbara Scharnau, and nationally recognized wildlife photographer, Sandy Zelasko, addressed the attendees on the significance of nature-centric art and how it has helped to raise awareness and thousands of dollars in support of North County’s open space preservation and protection of flora and fauna. As Zelasko so eloquently put it,
“As an artist it’s imperative to stir emotions in our viewers. Emotion ignites passion and passion promotes action.”
CONNECT North County partners include: Escondido Chamber of Citizens, Friends of Hellhole Canyon, Daley Ranch, San Pasqual Valley Preservation Alliance, Valley Center Trails Association and many others. These ecological advocate parties periodically meet to discuss shared environmental interests and to act collaboratively to build awareness for the value of North County’s environment.
The meeting adjourned with a surprise as Judith and Bahram Shadzi, owners of Cosmic Solar and Roofing presented VCAG’s treasurer, Barbara Scharnau with a $5,000 donation.
