Gas Tax Increases in July

STATE — Gas taxes and fees may surge over the next 12 months as a 2-cent tax will be added on July 1 and another 47 cents per gallon could be added next year from the California Air Resources Board.

On Thursday, San Diego County Supervisor Jim Desmond held a press conference on Thursday calling on the supervisors to fight back against massive government-controlled gas price increases. According to multiple media reports, CARB may raise its fee by an additional 52 cents in 2026, while diesel prices would increase by 59 and 66 in 2025-26, respectively.

Desmond will also bring forward an agenda item during next week’s Board of Supervisors meeting calling on the supervisors to support a measure to call on Gov. Gavin Newsom and the legislature to stop the tax increase.

Jet fuel would also be subject to the fees with an expected increase of $1.21 from 2031-46, according to reports.

Regardless, the gas tax increase will go into effect on July 1, while the decision to implement the CARB fees has been postponed until November, according to reports.
