As you may have heard, Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs (GEAR UP) is a prestigious and proven United States Department of Education Grant. Palomar College received the Rural and Reservation GEAR UP Partnership Program Grant and is in partnership with Fallbrook Elementary Union, Fallbrook Union High, Valley Center-Pauma Unified and Vista Unified School Districts. We are supported by over 30 educational, community, and commerce partners.
GEAR UP Highlights:
1. The Rural & Reservation (Rural Res) will be serving 2,500 students from 6th/7th grade to high school, and through the first to second year of college (2016-2023).
2. Effective longitudinal tools to enhance students/schools for a college going culture, leading more students to post-secondary education.
3. Increase student success to obtain a college degree, in local Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math (STEAM) industries.
4. Businesses have the opportunity to collaborate by speaking at our STEAM workshops, participating in activities that promote higher education, and mentoring through job shadowing and career Q/A sessions.
From June 25th through August 3rd, 30 incoming high school freshmen students had the opportunity to attend the Palomar College Summer Enrichment Programs. These tuition-free classes earned them high school and college credits. Courses students enrolled in included: Build Your Own Computer and Head Start to College. On August 2, 2018 GEAR UP held a completion ceremony at the Palomar College San Marcos campus with families and friends.
Unique to GEAR UP, we require partnerships with local businesses to find ways to better connect commerce and future industries with middle and high school students, teachers, and parents, especially to promote the STEAM fields.
