WHY: Healthy Escondido Coalition resident leaders worked hand-in-hand with the City of
Escondido and the San Diego County Library to carry out the installation of a Little Free Library at Washington Park. Together, the group assessed the park to identify a location for installation, collected resident feedback and developed a community design for the Little Free Library. The Healthy Escondido Coalition is an organized group of residents, community-based organizations, City and County representatives and local business owners facilitated by Vista Community Clinic.
Many families consider their local park home as they offer spaces to gather with family and friends. Having the Little Free Library at a local park will increase literacy access for many who oftentimes have difficulty accessing available resources in their communities.
The Little Free Library is made possible through a literacy initiative brought forward by Supervisor Nora Vargas and unanimously approved in March 2021 by the County of San Diego Board of Supervisors.
Funded by USDA SNAP, an equal opportunity provider and employer, and supported by Live Well San Diego, the County’s vision for a region that is Building Better Health, Living Safely, and Thriving. For more information, visit www.LiveWellSD.org.
