OCEANSIDE, Calif. (FOX 5/KUSI) — Ruby Stringfellow redefined history at the 20th annual Super Girl Surf Festival in Oceanside on Aug. 23.
At age 14, she became the youngest surfer to earn the cape, overcoming fellow Orange County competitor Mia McLeish from San Clemente in the Final. On her road to the Final, Stringfellow defeated the previous youngest winner, San Clemente’s Eden Walla, in their Semifinal clash.
“This is insane that it’s the 20th year, and I’m the youngest to ever win; it’s just the cherry on top of the cherry. Just to anyone watching, you can pursue your dreams because they can come true,” said Stringfellow. “I saw Mia go on that wave and just thought, oh my gosh, please no. But when they said the wave didn’t have enough power for her to complete it, I was speechless. This gives me a lot of confidence. It’s a contest I always wanted to win…..
