Sheriff’s Homicide detectives continued their investigation and identified twenty-year-old George Gomez III as a suspect in the murder of Dante Lopez.
On July 14, 2021, Gomez was arrested and booked into San Diego Central Jail for one count of 187(a) PC – Murder. Gomez is a resident of the city of San Diego.
The investigation is on-going.
As a correction to the prior release, Donte Lopez’s first name was incorrect. The correct spelling was Dante Lopez.

On July 13, 2021, the Medical Examiner’s Office conducted the autopsy and has identified the victim as forty-two-year-old Donte Anthony Lopez. Lopez is a resident of the city of San Diego. Lopez’s family has been notified of his death. The preliminary cause of death is gunshot wound and the manner of death is homicide.
Information from first release:
On July 11, 2021, at about 11:15 p.m., Sheriff’s deputies responded to the 1000 block of Elkelton Boulevard in Spring Valley for a report of a shooting. When deputies arrived, they found an adult male who had been shot near the intersection of Elkelton Boulevard and Crestmore Avenue. Deputies immediately attempted lifesaving efforts until relieved by fire personnel. The male was transported to a local area hospital for treatment. Unfortunately, he was pronounced deceased shortly after arriving at the hospital.
The Sheriff’s Homicide Unit responded and has assumed responsibility of the investigation. The identity of the male is known to investigators; however, his name is being withheld pending family notification.
