On Wednesday, July 5, 2023, at around 11:25 a.m., deputies received a radio call of an assault with a deadly weapon in the 100 block of Camino Corto in Vista. Deputies arrived on scene and located a 37-year-old male adult, later identified as Juan Valdovinos, suffering from gunshot wounds to his upper torso. Deputies and medical personnel provided medical aid on scene. Valdovinos was transported to the hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
Witnesses informed deputies the suspect, later identified as 32-year-old Jose Gonzalez, was in the area on foot. Deputies located and detained Gonzalez, who was found to be in possession of a firearm. There are no outstanding suspects. Gonzalez was arrested for one count of 187(a) PC – Murder.
According to witnesses, they heard an argument between Gonzalez and Valdovinos outside of their residences. Both men live on the same block of Camino Corto. At this stage of the investigation, the nature of the relationship between Valdovinos and Gonzalez is unclear. The motivation and circumstances of the shooting are still under investigation.
