Each year the VFFA 4107 Charity Committee reaches out to our community and finds individual people, families, organizations and causes needing their support. Through teamwork, we strive to strengthen the bonds of our community with selfless acts and generosity. The Hop Highway Brew-Off is a gathering of firefighter home-brewers that represent their departments in a home-brewing contest for prizes including the highly sought after 1st Place Brew-Off Champion Fire Helmet. This tasting contest is judged by both the public and professional brewers. This years contest was held May 27th at Indian Joe Brewing. Over $13,000.00 was raised for Dan Geary of Cal Fire who is this years recipient in 2018.
For over 15 years, Dan Geary has served and given his heart selflessly to the community as a Firefighter/Paramedic. Currently working for Cal Fire, Dan is just like any other SoCal resident who enjoys the outdoors, surfing, riding his Harley and traveling. He looks to the future with his girlfriend, Chelsea of over 3 years, to one day getting married and starting a family. Unfortunately last summer, Dan and his doctors found a tumor. A few months later, Dan’s oncologist informed him that the tumor was a Stage 4 Glioblastoma, a brain tumor which is often fatal. Dan has undergone surgery and countless appointments for radiation and chemotherapy. His oncologist said he has two to twelve months to live. Dan has been trying to stay positive through all his treatments and despite what the doctors are saying, he believes whole heartedly he is going to beat this.
