In late November 2018, Caltrans and the San Diego Association of Governments will begin construction to extend the carpool lane on I-5 in each direction between Manchester Avenue in the City of Encinitas, and Palomar Airport Road in the City of Carlsbad. In Carlsbad, expect to see the construction team start working on the median of I-5, putting in k-rail, clearing vegetation and removing the existing median. The work to widen and build the carpool lanes is expected to last 18 months. These improvements are part of the North Coast Corridor Project, which includes highway, rail, bike/pedestrian, and environmental improvements along a 27-mile stretch of I-5 in the north San Diego County coastal corridor.
