San Marcos, Calif., August 14, 2024 – McCarthy Building Companies, Inc. (McCarthy), one of the largest and most diversified construction companies in America for over 160 years, today announced the concrete start and tower crane arrival at Cal State San Marcos (CSUSM) for the University Village Housing and Dining (UVHD) facility.
A future model for on-campus housing access and equity, progress is underway on the 140,661 square-foot student housing and dining facility, which aims to increase access for underserved, low-income students and support their social mobility and success in their journey toward a higher education degree. The complex will be home to 550 additional student residents and a 10,888 square-foot dining hall that will provide affordable meal plans for students.
CSUSM received $91 million from Gov. Gavin Newsom and the California Legislature in their 2022-23 budget. CSUSM was awarded the second-highest amount out of the $497 million allocated for student housing projects on nine California State University campuses, a reflection of CSUSM’s commitment to remove obstacles students face including affordable housing.
Out of 16,000 total students, 2,000 students currently live on campus. With the addition of the UVHD facility, 550 more students will get to experience the unique experience of on-site student living.

McCarthy is partnering with architecture firm Gensler on the project. Previous education collaborations include the California State University, Long Beach Parkside North Residence Hall and Housing Administration Building, which notable achieved LEED Platinum status.
The project is slated for completion in Summer 2026.
