Measure X is the 1/2 cent sales tax measure passed in November 2018 by Oceanside voters. The revenue from the 1/2 cent is slated specifically for public safety, road repairs, improved infrastructure, and addressing homelessness in the City of Oceanside. The Ordinance went into effect in April 2019 and provides for accountability by a Citizens Oversight Committee, separate funds, spending plans, and an annual independent audit.
Oceanside’s current Fire Station 1 was constructed in 1929 on Pier View Way and is thought to be one of the oldest operating Fire Stations in the nation. The building, designed by famed architect Irving Gill, does not accommodate modern-sized apparatus and equipment and requires seismic upgrading.
Future location of new Fire Station 1
The site of the new Fire Station 1 will be located at
602 Civic Center Drive, where the City’s current Code Enforcement offices are situated. The Code Enforcement offices will be relocated to the former Ocean Shores site near Oceanside Boulevard and El Camino Real. The new Fire Station has been designed to accommodate larger ladder trucks and crews.
Funding for new Fire Station design and construction
Your Measure X funds are at work! Aside from Measure X revenue for the new station, the City was recently invited to apply for a $3.5 million federal Defense Community Infrastructure Program grant — one of only 13 projects selected nationwide. This grant funding will help offset the project’s anticipated $18M cost. Oceanside’s close proximity to, and excellent working relationship with Marine Corps Base (MCB) Camp Pendleton played a key role in achieving the grant funding invitation. The grant will enhance public safety and resilience for both Oceanside and MCB Camp Pendleton during emergency situations.
Demolition of the current Code Enforcement offices is expected to occur in February and the construction of the new Fire Station is anticipated to begin in March 2022.
