Men’s Basketball Cougars Torch Warriors to Begin Road Trip, 71-42

TURLOCK, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos men’s basketball team (5-7, 4-2 CCAA) never trailed for the second consecutive game and earned its fourth straight CCAA win in a 71-42 blowout at Stanislaus State (4-8, 1-5 CCAA) on Thursday night at Ed & Bertha Fitzpatrick Arena.

HOW IT HAPPENED
After beginning the game tied 6-6, CSUSM took the lead for good on a Henderson jumper to make it 8-6 with 16:09 to go in the first half.
The Cougars went up by double digits as Collins nailed a jumper off a turnover to make it 20-10 with 11:05 remaining in the period.
The Warriors trimmed the deficit to six points at 22-16 on a Cam Walker 3-pointer with 8:54 left in the half, but the Cougars used a 10-3 run to go up 32-19 after a Pope layup with 4:30 to go in the period.
CSUSM went to the locker room with its largest lead of the game at 38-24 after a second-chance layup by Collins in the final second of play.
CSUSM shot 51.7% (15-of-29) from the field and was 60% (6-of-10) from beyond the arc in the first half while holding Stanislaus to 28% (7-of-25) from the field.
The Cougars began the second half with an 11-5 run and went up by 20 at 49-29 on a Schultz layup with 12:54 to go.
Stanislaus tried to gain some momentum with a seven-point run to cut the deficit to 13 at 49-36 after an Isaiah Jones jumper, but CSUSM immediately scored 10 unanswered points to go up 59-36 after a Collins layup with 6:44 remaining.
The Cougars scored the game’s final basket as Uriah Foster made a layup to give CSUSM its largest lead of the game at 71-42 with 44 ticks left.
CSUSM held Stan State to 23.3% (7-of-30) from the field in the second half while it went 45.2% (14-of-31).

FAST BREAKS
CSUSM ended the game shooting a season-best 48.3% (29-of-60) from the field for the second consecutive game while holding Stanislaus to 25.5% (14-of-55).
The Cougars won the battle of the boards with a season-high 43 rebounds to the Warriors’ 36.
CSUSM posted 13 assists to Stan State’s six.
The Cougars committed fewer turnovers at 15-12.
The Warriors had one more steal than the Cougars at 7-6.
CSUSM scored 19 points off Stanislaus’ 15 turnovers and tallied 15 second-chance points.
This was the Cougars’ fifth consecutive win over the Warriors and second consecutive game winning by at least 29 points.
CSUSM is now 10-3 in the all-time series against Stanislaus and is 5-2 when playing in Turlock.
The Warriors’ 42 points were its fewest of the season and were the second fewest by a CSUSM opponent this season.
The Cougars have made at least 9 3-point field goals in the past four games.
This was CSUSM’s 11th consecutive game with at least 11 assists.
Collins’ game-leading 18 points matched his career high for the second consecutive game.
