Men’s Basketball CSUSM Earns 80-75 Win Over Stanislaus State on Senior Day

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – In its home finale, the Cal State San Marcos men’s basketball team (9-14, 8-9 CCAA) earned an 80-75 win over Stanislaus State (6-17, 3-14 CCAA) on Saturday afternoon at The Sports Center.

Before the game, CSUSM honored seniors Edwyn Collins, Bing Huang and Chris Howard.

HOW IT HAPPENED
CSUSM posted an early 14-9 lead on two good free throws by Bing Huang at the 15:51 mark of the half.
The Warriors took their first lead at 17-16 with a second-chance 3-pointer by Dontrell Hewlett with 13:18 remaining in the period.
The Cougars trailed 42-32 at the half with Collins and Henderson each contributing 10 points.
Stan State shot 50.0% (16-of-32) in the opening 20 minutes to CSUSM’s 42.3% (11-of-26).
A Uriah Foster free throw cut Stan State’s lead to four (48-44) at the 14:29 mark of the second half.
A Foster 3-pointer from the top of the circle gave CSUSM its first lead of the second half, making it 61-60 with 7:23 remaining.
Collins sunk four free throws to extend CSUSM’s lead to 65-60 at 6:16.
After the Warriors closed the lead to 68-67, Jack Schultz dropped a 3-pointer from the corner to make it 71-67.
A layup by Stan State’s Hewlett evened the score at 73-all with 1:24 remaining.
On a pass from Henderson, Bing Huang swished a 3-pointer to put CSUSM back on top at 76-73 with 58 ticks remaining.
With three seconds on the shot clock, Collins took the inbound pass from Schultz and sunk the jumper from the end line from 15 feet out to make it 78-75 with 14 seconds remaining.
CSUSM closed out the game with a pair of free throws by Collins to set a new career high in points with 32.
The Cougars outscored the Warriors by a 48-33 margin in the second half.

FAST BREAKS
CSUSM ended the game shooting 45.6% (26-of-57) from the field while Stan State had the hotter hand at 50% (31-of-62).
The Cougars had the advantage in assists (11-8), steals (7-6) and blocks (4-2) while committing fewer turnovers (19-13).
Collins became the fourth Cougar to go 100% (10-of-10) from the free throw line while making at least 10 free throws.
This was Collins’ second double-double performance of the year.
CSUSM’s win put them back into a tie with San Francisco State for sixth in the CCAA standings with five games remaining.
This was the Cougars’ sixth consecutive win against the Warriors, all since Jan. 30, 2020.
CSUSM is now 11-3 in the all-time series against Stanislaus and is 6-1 against the Warriors when playing at home.

CSUSM will finish the regular season with a five-game road trip beginning at Cal State Dominguez Hills on Thursday at 7:30 p.m.
