On Saturday, June 18th, 2022, at 1:28 am, the Oceanside Police Department responded to a collision involving a vehicle and a motorist who appears to have exited his vehicle on Westbound SR-76, just West of Douglas Drive. Upon arrival, officers located a male lying in the middle of the roadway who was pronounced dead at the scene. Based on witness statements and physical evidence, the preliminary investigation believes the deceased pulled onto the North shoulder of SR-76 for an unknown reason. Sometime later, a second vehicle traveling in the same direction saw a person lying in the middle of the roadway and attempted to avoid the subject, but ultimately struck him with their vehicle. That driver immediately pulled over and called 9-1-1. It does not appear that speed or alcohol was a factor in this collision. The name of the deceased has not been released pending family notification. The Oceanside Police Department Major Accident Investigation Team responded to investigate the collision.
