Today, we lost an honorable man. It is with heartbreak, we announce the passing of Vista Fire Inspector Mike McFadden. A friend, a leader, a true gentleman who served his community in the fire service for decades, with dignity and integrity.
Mike was given a miracle and cherished every moment of his gift. 15 years ago he developed a serious illness which required a heart transplant. He was the first heart transplant recipient in the nation (2011) to return to active duty-going from a Captain with Carlsbad Firefighters Association (Local 3730) to a Fire Inspector with the Vista Fire Department. Just recently diagnosed with a rare skin cancer, the treatment options ran a high risk of stopping or rejecting his heart-a heart which he knew to be his miracle gift. Mike continued working, to do what he loved, serving his community through the fire service. His presence will be greatly missed. We send our deepest condolences to his family and those who feel his loss.
*In 2016, the City Council proclaimed April 22 Fire Inspector Mike McFadden Day in the City of Vista.
In honor of Mike McFadden and his dedication to others please consider an act of kindness in his name on April 22nd.
