Next District Election Hearing, 7/11

The next hearing on the City of Carlsbad’s transtion to “by district” City Council elections will take place Tuesday, July 11, starting at 6 p.m., at City Hall, 1200 Carlsbad Village Drive. The meeting will be livestreamed online and on the city’s cable channel (Spectrum channel 24 and AT&T U-verse channel 99).

Members of the public already gave input to the City Council on proposed maps showing district bounaries at a hearing Thursday, June 29. The July 11 hearing is a second opportunity to provide input on draft maps. A full schedule of meetings and hearings is available on the city website.

Under the new system, the city would have four City Council districts, and the mayor would continue to be elected “at large,” meaning voters from throughout the city would have an opportunity to vote for that position.

The city’s professional demographers and members of the public have created map options, which can be viewed on the city’s website or at the Office of the City Clerk.

More information about the change to electing City Council members by districts is available on the city’s website,  www.carlsbadca.gov/districts, including information about:

  • Why the city is making the change
  • The criteria for district boundaries
  • Draft maps and comments from the public
  • How district elections would be phased in, starting in 2018
  • Presentations, reports and other source documents for review
