OCEANSIDE, CA — JOINT STATEMENT REGARDING RESIDENTIAL FIRE & DEATH INVESTIGATION

OCEANSIDE, CA — At approximately 3:30 a.m. on Monday, July 21, the Oceanside Police and Fire Departments responded to a residential structure fire in the 2000 block of Wedgewood Drive. Upon arrival, first responders located a deceased individual outside the residence. Preliminary information indicates the individual appeared to have self-inflicted injuries unrelated to the fire. The exact cause of death remains under investigation. Thanks to swift coordination between both departments, the fire was contained and extinguished quickly. In the days leading up to the incident, the individual had been the subject of multiple welfare checks by Oceanside Police following reports of self-harm and mental health concerns. Oceanside Police had prior contact with the individual related to concerns about his well-being. Officers took steps to prioritize safety and provide appropriate assistance. The circumstances surrounding the fire and the individual’s death remain under active investigation. Additional details will be released as they become available. The Red Cross was on scene and providing assistance to others affected by this incident
