OCEANSIDE — Intrigue, mystery and sometimes murder are the subjects of a new local true crime podcast focusing on coastal North County.
Friends Kristi Hawthorne and Porsche Locker, both of Oceanside, combined their passions for storytelling, research, and mystery into “Coastal Crimes,” which focuses on some of Oceanside’s and North County’s cold cases. Their first podcast, available on Spotify and YouTube, revisits one of the most famous cases in Oceanside history —Killer Sally — and deconstructs the popular Netflix documentary on the case. Sally McNeil, a Marine and bodybuilder, shot and killed her husband, Ray McNeil, who was also a Marine and bodybuilder, on Feb. 14, 1995.
The second podcast was first reported by Hawthorne, the director of the Oceanside Historical Society, on her Histories and Mysteries blog. The story dives into the 1962 cold-case murder of Oceanside taxicab driver Ray Davis, and how Hawthorne theorized it may have been the first, or one of the first, murders by the infamous Zodiac Killer, who terrorized San Francisco in 1968-69, then vanished without a trace and became one of America’s true crime obsessions.
