Oceanside Public Library, in partnership with the League of Women Voters of North County San Diego, invites you to participate in this year’s National Voter Registration Day activities.
When George Washington was elected president in 1789, only 6% of the U.S. population was eligible to vote. Since then, Americans have marched, gone on hunger strikes, been beaten, and even died to win the right to vote. Sadly, today, many Americans take for granted the right to vote. In an online workshop on Tuesday, September 22 at 11 a.m., presenter Blaze Newman will tell the inspiring story of the Americans who fought for the past 172 years for the right to vote and the voting challenges present today. We’ll also discuss why so many Americans don’t vote and how to get registered.
Blaze Newman has participated in every election since she became eligible to vote in 1972. For over 30 years, she taught a variety of classes in the San Dieguito Union High School district, including U.S. Government. Since retiring, Blaze has volunteered with the League of Women Voters registering people to vote and empowering them to do so.
