On April 19, Oceanside Unified School District hosted its first-ever Middle School Mathfest at the El Corazon Senior Center—a lively, hands-on event designed to celebrate math and bring the community together.

Middle school students from across the district teamed up to solve challenging math problems and participated in an exciting “Amazing Math Race,” where they raced to different locations to complete tasks and crack puzzles using their math skills. The event emphasized collaboration, critical thinking, and the fun side of mathematics.

While students were immersed in the competition, families participated in a parent workshop focused on high school math pathways and how math connects to various college degrees and career opportunities. The session offered valuable information and helped parents better understand how to support their students as they move through secondary education.

Adding to the day’s inspiration were guest speakers—engineers from the City of Oceanside—who shared their educational and career journeys, highlighting the real-world importance of math in their work.

The event’s success was made possible by the support of dedicated middle school math teachers, high school student volunteers, and parent volunteers. Mathfest was a true community effort and a powerful reminder that math can be meaningful and fun.
